A Morningside College grad is entering the race for a contested Woodbury County Supervisor's position.

On Tuesday Alex Waters submitted almost 300 signatures to the Woodbury County auditor and announced he's seeking the Democratic nomination for the county's 4th district seat.

One issue Watters says he plans to focus on is working on economic development so young professionals will want to stay in Sioux City.

"I think that as a state and as a county we're moving in that direction and I think we're doing a great job educating our young professionals here in Woodbury County with all the great schools we have here. I just wanna make sure that they're not leaving to go elsewhere in the region or even on the costs."

Watters, who currently works at Morningside college is running against incumbent David Tripp. Tripp was unavailable for comment.

A Morningside College administrator said Monday he plans to challenge incumbent Woodbury County Board member David Tripp in November. 

Alex Watters, 27, a Democrat, is running for the District 4 seat, which covers Sioux City. Tripp was elected in 2010 as a Republican and has announced plans to seek re-election. 

Watters said the County Board needs a new view on issues.

“I believe that Woodbury County’s best years are ahead of us, and that we need a fresh perspective moving forward on the board of supervisors," he said.

SCJ: LETTER – Support Alex Watters for county supervisor

 I got to know Alex Watters while we both attended Morningside College.

We both were very active on campus and in various organizations in the community. Following graduation, he received a master's degree in negotiation and dispute resolution from Creighton University and then went on to work with the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C.

I was proud of him that he was accomplishing so much, but I am more excited about the fact that he has returned to Sioux City. Since moving back more than two years ago he has engaged himself in the community to truly make a difference. I have served with him on the board of Mary Treglia Community House, Young Professionals of Iowa, and most recently worked with him on the Young Professionals of Iowa conference that he co-chaired. His dedication to our community is evident in the involvement and impact he has had on our community.

We are lucky to have him in Woodbury County. His vision and passion for Woodbury County will help drive us forward in the future. Please vote for him for Woodbury County Board of Supervisors on Nov. 4.
